The housing market is a troubling place at the moment. With house prices being incredibly high before the recession, many people found it tough to buy a new home. Now that we are in a recession, house prices started to fall, however, because of the recession, it’s almost impossible to get a mortgage.

This combination has led to many rent property rather than buying their own home. It’s not just people looking to live in the property that want to rent. Many property investors are looking more at buy to let mortgages as these are easier to get and the investment seems to get a better return.

There are actually a number of advantages of renting property over buying. The main one would be that it’s easier to get a rental property because there are more available in the market. The monthly payments required are less as mortgage tend to charge a larger monthly fee. Tenants also have the plus of not having to worry about paying for any maintenance costs. The landlord is normally responsible for any property maintenance.

One problem that is often found in older property is mold and mildew. Even if you don’t have a problem with mold in your home, if you rent a flat, it could be someone else’s property that’s causing problems. Because mold can cause serious health issues, you are allowed to request a mold inspection of the property, even if you see no visible signs of mold in your home. If no work is being done to resolve the mold problem, you have the right to stop paying your rent and pay for the work yourself.

Of course you can buy appliances such as dehumidifiers that would help to reduce any chance of getting mold in your home. A dehumidifier is used to lower levels of humidity in your home back down to the recommend level of between 40 and 60%. Buying such a simple piece of equipment will help to reduce humidity and mold within your home.

A simple weather station won’t be able to tell you how much humidity there is in your home, you’ll have to get a thermohygrometer to get an accurate reading of humidity levels.
