Home water softeners make the water soft by replacing calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions.  They employ a resin tank which has beads of sodium ions to make this happen.  When water comes into the resin tank calcium and magnesium ions are naturally interested in the sodium ions enabling the water to become free of them and softer.  A water softener system will also come with a brine tank which collects the calcium and magnesium ions when the resin tank runs out of sodium ions.  The brine tank will take out all the calcium and magnesium ions and replace them with further sodium ions.  Soft water will run clear and will not block up your appliances the way hard water will.   

There are two main kinds of water softener systems offered nowadays.  One system is the automated softeners which contains a timer which controls the method of ion regeneration.  A demand initiated regeneration ( DIR ) system will administer the ion regeneration process based primarily on the demands placed on the system.  It is important that you choose a water softener system based on your individual desires.  To do this you’ll need to learn a little more about the way the systems operate and which is best for you.   

The first thing you’ll have to figure out is how much water your folks generally uses.  Everyone in this country sometimes uses nearly eighty gallons a day.  The size of your family will establish the full amount of water that’s used.  The charging cycle of the water softer wants to match the demands which will be placed on the system.  The water softener must also be straightforward to clean.  It is not a smart idea to purchase the first system you find or the least costly.  Take some time to get referrals and read online reviews so that you can make sure you are purchasing the best system for your wishes.
