Christmas is the time of year when being with family and friends is first and foremost on your mind. Getting together with those nearest and dearest to you is important. What better way to share time and a few laughs with each other than with a good Christmas movie.

A Christmas Story (1983) Poor Ralphie just wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Why can’t anyone understand? They all just keep repeating the same old sad refrain – “you’ll shoot your eye out.” It’s 1940s America at Christmastime. Ralphie’s family is busy preparing, and Ralphie is busy trying to get his BB gun by leaving subtle hints around the house. Of course, disruptions like his father’s winning a “major award”, double-dog-daring a kid to stick his tongue to the flag pole, and daydreaming up the awful consequences of getting one’s mouth washed out with soap for saying the “fudge” word, keep happening to distract Ralphie from his ultimate goal… the Red Ryder BB Gun. Even being forced to wear pink bunny pajamas, complete with ears, can’t stop him from keeping his eye on the prize.

Elf (2003) Will Ferrell is a six foot elf who is let loose in New York City in search of his father. How did there come to be a six foot elf? When a baby in an orphanage crawls into Santa’s gift bag, he ends up at the North Pole and is raised by the elves. Baby Buddy grows up and realizes that he’s different from the other elves and learns the truth. His father is alive and on Santa’s “Naughty List” living in New York City. Buddy is on a mission to meet his father and get him on the “Nice List.” When Buddy realizes that not everyone LOVES Christmas like he does, he sets out to change them into true believers. Hilarious moments and great performances by Ferrell, as well as James Caan, and Bob Newhart, make this a must see movie.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) George Bailey is a man with big dreams in a little town. He longs to travel, but when his family needs him, he has to give up his dreams. He settles into a nice home with a beautiful wife and family, but when an evil millionaire who wants to run the town threatens to ruin his life, George feels so much despair that he needs special help. That help comes in the form of Clarence, the guardian angel who is on his first trip to Earth to earn his angel wings. When Clarence answers George’s prayer, the whole town takes a turn for the worse, showing George just how much he really means to the town, his family, and his friends. With a glad heart, George realizes what they mean to him, too, and all is well! Funny moments and touching moments add up to a movie worthy of your special movie time with your family.

The Santa Clause (1994) Charlie is a boy with an imagination, but his imagination could get him in trouble with his Mom and her psychiatrist husband. Charlie’s Dad, Scott, is trying hard to let his son’s imagination run wild, but stories about going to the North Pole with Santa are a stretch. The problem is Charlie was at the North Pole with his Dad, but his Dad denies it. He even believes that his own memories of the night are a dream and his new “SC” monogrammed pj’s stand for Scott Calvin and not Santa Claus. What Scott is unwilling to believe for a long time is that he signed on with the Santa “clause” when the first Santa fell off his roof! After the initial shock wears off, Scott is more than willing to show his son a proper Christmas Eve. When you see the end of this movie, you’ll be a believer, too!

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) The entire Muppet ensemble is turned out in classic costume for this remake of the literary masterpiece. Featuring Michael Caine, in person, as Ebeneezer Scrooge, this Christmas classic is well done and extremely entertaining. Charles Dickens is played beautifully by the Great Gonzo, and who doesn’t find that funny! The Muppets bring this classic tale to children using a lighthearted approach with laughter and music. The ghost scenes are not too dramatic or scary. This is a movie made for kids and grown ups alike.

Pick out a few movies and make a date with your family this year to spend some time together. Get out your blankets and pillows, pop some popcorn, and meet your loved ones in front of the television! Enjoy your snuggle time!
